7:30 pm Houghton Mifflin Editor Ann Rider will provide individual feedback to Retreat participants, commenting on the opening 400-800 words of each attending writer who chooses to have their work considered.
9:00 pm Individual writing time
Saturday
7:00 am OPTIONAL hike and chance to talk informally with Laura
8:00 am Breakfast: while we are eating, Laura and Lisa will share anecdotes about the revision process and how they respond to feedback they receive from their writing groups and editors.
9:00 am Individual writing time
10:00 am On-the-spot critiques of participants’ manuscript excerpts
12:00 noon Field trip to Redbery Books, an independent bookstore in Cable that has generously agreed to provide our lunch. Over lunch, Lisa & Laura will talk about how they use bookstores as a key resource for both writing and submitting their work, and then we’ll have some browsing time.
1:30 pm Individual writing time to give participants the opportunity to generate new work or make revisions based on the feedback they have received
5:00 pm OPTIONAL gathering on the outside terrace for an informal talk with Lisa
6:00 pm Group dinner; Lisa and Laura will share some “nuts and bolts” basics about children’s book writing.
7:00 pm Writing activities centered around “Finding Your Unique Voice as a Writer”
8:00 pm Time for participants to informally share more of their manuscripts with the group
Sunday
8:00 am Breakfast: As we eat, Lisa & Laura will share anecdotes and info about their lives as “working writers” and the publishing process: editors, agents, facing rejection.
9:00 am On-the-spot critiques of participants’ manuscript excerpts
11:00 am Individual writing time
12:30 pm Lunch and time to chat with your “new best friends”
1:30 pm Final Q&A session, including a discussion about how to stay motivated, develop productive writing habits, and how to set and stick to creative goals
2:30 pm Head home

Participants who crave additional writing time are free to opt out of any scheduled group events; likewise, the facility will have a room set aside for Writing Retreat participants only, and participants are free to gather there during scheduled writing times if they will appreciate additional social interaction.
